How we helped Barnardo's

Application development and team leadership for Barnardo’s, London.

Barnardo's is a British charity founded by Thomas John Barnardo in 1866, to care for vulnerable children and young people. They are one of the UK's leading children's charities. We helped with their development work and tech leadership.

Consulting

Barnardo's approached tosbourn ltd. to help with their digital transformation team, we are assisting with backend development work and high level planning.

A company with the remit of Barnardo's has a strong data protection requirement, we have to develop any application with the safety and security of user data at the core of everything we do.

We've worked with their team to create internal and external tools and are continuing to help plan and execute on several projects.

Some of the projects we worked on include:

  • A contactless donation solution
  • A way for young people to provide consent for research
  • We helped Barnardo's retain its ISO 27001 certification
  • We built a proxy tool to help secure access to systems that was used over 1 million times by the time our contract ended
  • Developed working practices and guidelines

We hired tosbourn to deliver Ruby on Rails training, and Toby took charge of the syllabus and timetable pretty much immediately. It was refreshing to not have a series of tedious meetings before getting started. Toby's depth of knowledge and the way he communicates that knowledge made everything run smoothly and on schedule. What was most impressive was Toby producing extra video content we can continue to use long after the training is over. The training has already had a positive effect in the wider organisation, and given our developers the confidence to tackle bigger, more complex, and more impactful projects. I would happily recommend tosbourn for RoR training, no hesitationDerek Johnson, Senior Manager - Online Platforms
Having worked with Tosbourn in my professional capacity I'm more than happy to give them a strong recommendation, they are hardworking approachable and probably most importantly highly knowledgable!Michael Richards, Product Manager
The training I received from you has been so valuable and has definitely helped my confidence grow. I am less afraid to answer questions now when asked if we are able to do something and I'm being able to apply the coding skills to not only Rails projects but other projects too. I feel like I am actually working out things now and understanding it, rather than trying to find an example, guessing, and attempting. If something breaks, I can easily go and look at code again and think logically why it might be breaking and fix it. To develop so much in short space of time has been not just beneficial to me but to Barnardo's too. If anyone needs training in coding/Rails, I recommend Toby, as he was extremely flexible, and made amazing suggestions on how the training should mould to my benefit and at the same time considered what I wanted to learn and develop on. I can see the difference in myself and my understanding of the code every day and go back to the thought, that this is because of Toby.Rita Patel, Developer
